Package Systems

A major difficulty in adapting to any Linux distribution, is to understand your installation system packages.
In K / Ubuntu, ie the distribution of the moment: P, the manager of packages is apt-get (not undoing of other distributions, but this is what I am using). The tool itself runs Debian packages Packeg - dpkg, which as you see, was a system adopted from the Debian distribution, as the whole Ubuntu.
In Windows, the standard is to install the application through removable media (CD, flash memories, etc.) or download the application from the Internet and then install. On Linux you can do exactly the same way, but what differs is the ability to install applications from repositories on the Internet somewhere (is not good.) The repositories are places where they are saved many programs, tools, utilities for Linux., Etc ...
Usually differ from the distribution repositories for distribution. Later, you'll see here a topic about some extra repositories (ie non-official repositories for K / Ubuntu).
In this way we avoid to have saved on CD's, DVD's, disks, "TeraGigas," floppies:), among others ...
In the Kubuntu distribution, has released the Adept Installer which is just a graphical interface for apt-get. Just us into this tool (the shortcut to the description that Add / Remove Programs) and inserting the name in the application, or only the initial letters, and follow ...
As shown in the figure below it was a messenger type program, the Emesene to install.

Another very good package manager (even higher than the Adept) is Synaptic. This can be installed in many distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Suse, CM, etc ...). But on this manager will soon only a topic on it.

Tips for starting ...

When it is in principle all councils are few ... So here are some. of who has passed the "as passas do Algarve" to take this to function as it should be. Wait! It was not so bad!

The 5 basic advice:
1 - Download Kubunto:
latest version (http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download).
or
1 - Download CM:
latest version (http://www2.caixamagica.pt/pag/b_down00.php)
2 - Install, taking care to the entire installation wizard, especially during the creation of partitions.
3 - Connecting the system to the Internet, and apply the updates that you feel necessary Adept Installer (There is an icon appears in the lower right corner with updates missing).
4 - Start using Windows as if they were, and little by little, trying to resolve difficulties and problems that arise, one at a time.
5 - Do not quit. This is important because this stage will miss the beauty of Windows XP. But sure, later this nostalgia will disappear.

Note: In this post, I only download two distributions because they are the two I have been testing / evaluation / work. Obviously there is no time to test all: (the ones that exist. So here are also other well known and used: openSUSE [1], Alinex [2] Fedora [3], etc ...

The beginning of everything ...

Well, start by saying that I am not pro in linux! This is just to clarify, not come here to build me xico in with yet another smart blog about linux!
Yes come on my own experience. And my experience is only my experience, not even to be "some experience". Therefore assumes that the word "some" already includes plenty of fruit!

Started me more seriously in the discipline of Linux a Bachelor of Computer Science and Communications, which took in EStG (www.estg.ipleiria.pt).

Then reigned (in the middle where I was) the Fedora distribution and was by that I started. The classes were taught in Fedora and my final draft of course was in Fedora.

Now (August 2008),'m at the stage of Kubuntu! We have also walked the stage of Ubuntu! But KDE, by now convinced me:)

I live here then retract, or almost directly, with delays of several hours (which could be days: P), the adventure of an astronaut on a new planet - linux.

Yes, that is what they are thinking, migrate to linux and not use windows on both PC's at work (laptop and PC).
I have only one virtual machine with VMware on Windows XP that occasional use, moreover, is all in linux!

And this post was the start of this blog: D
Go now ...
